How to have great days out without spending any money.
Many of these ideas are not even weather dependent making them perfect for a winter break. If you have a National Trust card the National Trust properties are covered on the main “Things To Do” page but below are some ideas not covered elsewhere.
Holburne Museum
is free to visitors on Wednesdays 3-5pm. It is an attractive museum of the decorative arts which has reopened after the building of an extension. If you are still in museum mode you could follow this with a visit to the
Victoria Art Gallery
whose collections range from the 15th Century to the present day.
You can even have a free two hour guided tour of Bath taking in the Royal Crescent , Circus and the outside of the Baths and Abbey . More information on the Mayor’s Honorary Guide Tours can be found at

Visit Bath
has a website with a useful section called Bath on a Budget where you can print off a map showing the many occasions where Bath has been used as a film location and download a free audio walking tour.
Top tip- parking in Bath can add up- park for free up North Road – its only a short walk to the City Centre
Start by taking a tour of the market town. Devizes has a very comprehensive website
Devizes Town
The Kennet and Avon Canal is a major attraction. Walk or cycle along the towpath to the famous Caen Hill Locks a flight of 29 locks which was the solution to the steep hill in Devizes. If you are interested in the construction of the Kennet and Avon Canal then the Kennet and Avon Museum is free on Sundays.K & A Canal
Devizes is famous for its Wadworth’s Brewery and there is a free Visitor CentreWadworths Brewery
If you like markets-Thursday is market day and Monday currently sees the Old Curiosity Market
Lots to do in Bradford from a Saxon Church to The huge Tithe Barn, a free museum ,browsing in the shops in the Shambles and walking to Avoncliff which is a spectacular point where river, canal and railway meet. I could write plenty but the town website does it perfectly Bradford on Avon The Tourist Information Centre has free leaflets of walks but here is quite an easy one that takes in most of what Bradford has to offer Bradford Walks Cheap Treat - hire a canoe for 4 for £12 for an hour on the canal Canoe Hire
Even if you are not a National Trust member there is plenty to do in Lacock . Walk around the village and see the Abbey, church, gaol and where Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice were filmed, browse in the shops and walk over to Reybridge on this easy one hour Lacock walk

On the way up to Corsham from Lacock stop at Whitehall Garden Centre , especially if you have young children- the pet shop, tropical fish shop and play ground are fun.
In Corsham walk along the High Street with its excellent range of independent shops and into Corsham Park. Walk past the 17th century alms houses. If you are an English Heritage member you can visit Corsham Court for free. This is an easy 4 mile walk on the outskirts of Corsham

Malmesbury is an attractive town north of the motorway which has a lovely abbey Malmesbury Abbey and a free museum Malmesbury Museum Its also worth browsing in the town centre
Chippenham is our local market town which has a free museum Heritage Centre
Then drive out to Cherhill on the A4 and visit the White Horse . Great views if you walk up to the top. White Horses
Walk around Salisbury's medieval city centre or Cathedral Close and admire the huge variety of architecture. Go to choral evensong at Salisbury Cathedral -this takes place every day and is like going to a concert
It is expensive to visit Stonehenge but if you just want a quick look and you do get a good view this way then just look through the fence. Then visit Woodhenge - a late Neolithic or early bronze age monument situated between Larkhill and Amesbury .
Walk from Salisbury to Old Sarum via the path along the river.
